Girl on Empty / Abbie Meri

Your life should have room for you in it.

Work can take over your whole life if you let it. I want us to make room for our ideas, our interests, the people we love, and whatever we decide we want next.

Come in ↓

A little permission

You can like your life and still want something different.

Nothing has to be falling apart for you to want something different. You can be grateful for the life you have and still admit that the life you wanted five years ago might not be the life you want now.

Something feels harder than it used to.

You keep thinking about doing something differently.

You can't stop thinking about what else you could be doing.

SO, WHAT'S BEEN ON YOUR MIND?
SO, WHAT'S BEEN ON YOUR MIND?

Finish the sentence

Lately, I keep thinking…

Sometimes the same thought keeps coming back before you know what to do with it. Pick the one that feels closest to what has been sitting with you lately.

Work

I can’t keep working like this.

WORK / START HERE / 1 OF 3

Maybe you don’t hate your career. Maybe you hate your job.

A bad manager can make you hate going to work. So can being underpaid, working too much, or having a job that takes everything out of you. Sometimes the work itself isn’t even the part you’re tired of.

WORK / THINK / 2 OF 3

If the hours were better, the pay felt fair, and you liked the people you worked with, would you still feel this way about the actual work?

WORK / TRY / 3 OF 3

For the next five workdays, notice what makes you think, “I cannot keep doing this.”

What happened? What about it bothered you? What would have made that moment better? At the end of the five days, read your notes and see if the same things keep showing up.

TRY SOMETHING. No reason required.

A little curiosity

What sounds fun?

Go for a walk and listen to an album you’ve never heard before.

Pick one from an artist you’ve been meaning to listen to and play it from beginning to end.

Spend $7 on something you’ve never tried before.

Pick a snack, drink, dessert, or whatever looks good.

Go inside somewhere you always pass.

The bookstore, the little market, the gallery, the garden center, or that weird store you keep wondering about. Go see what’s in there.

Pick a movie without reading the reviews.

Pick whatever catches your attention and don’t look it up first.

Three plans you can steal

Don’t feel like making plans? Steal mine.

The “I need to get out of this house” plan

Go somewhere with a patio and get dinner. Walk around for a while instead of going straight home. Get dessert on the way back.

The “I have no plans Saturday” plan

Get coffee somewhere you’ve never been. Go wander around a bookstore, market, antique store, or whatever is nearby. Get lunch before you go home.

The “everybody is busy, so I’m going anyway” plan

Put on the outfit you’ve been waiting for plans to wear. Go do whatever you’ve been waiting for someone else to want to do with you. Get something to eat before you go home.

Hi, I’m Abbie.

I am incredibly grateful for the life I built. I’m also ready to build something else.

Her Juice Bar has been my life for seven years, and it gave me the life I wanted. I’m proud of what I built and everything it changed for me and my family.

But girl, seven years is a long time to do the same thing.

I wanted to create again. I wanted to talk about different things. I wanted to see what else I could build. Girl on Empty came out of me finally letting myself do that.

I’m figuring out what I want next while we talk about what you want next.

What’s Filling the Calendar

COMING SOON

Free walks, girls’ nights, brunches, bowling, and whatever else sounds fun enough to leave the house for.

PLEASE GET OUT OF THE HOUSE.

we mean this lovingly.

Tell me what’s been heavy on your mind.

If there’s something you’ve been going back and forth about, a decision you can’t seem to make, or a part of your life you know needs to change, write to me about it. Sometimes you just need another woman to look at the situation with you. If I’ve been through something similar, I’ll tell you what helped me. If I haven’t, we can still talk it through.

Sharing permission

I read every submission. If you choose to let me share yours, I may respond to it on Girl on Empty so other women dealing with something similar can learn from the conversation too. Your name and identifying details will never be shared.

Got it. I’ll read it.
